CHAPTER 20

ABYSS

ONE WEEK LATER…

“Anything else related to the businesses before we move on?”

Church has been dragging on for over an hour, and we’re just now getting past the weekly updates. All of the club’s enterprises are operating in the black and earning all of us a nice chunk of change.

“Great,” Soul says when no one speaks. “I’m gonna have Jez come in now to give us an update on Mel.”

He reaches under the table and presses the button that will open the door and allow Jez to enter. She saunters in like she owns the place, but that’s normal for her.

“Hiya, boys,” she chirps.

She’s carrying her laptop, and she sets it down on the table and takes the chair next to Fort. He’s the club’s tech guru, and they typically work together.

“Whaddya got for us?” Malice asks, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table.

Jez sighs dramatically. “Not much, actually.”

“How is that possible?” I demand. “You’ve been at this for a damn week.”

“Watch it,” Soul snarls, no doubt angry at my tone.

“She didn’t say we have nothing,” Fort states. “Just that it wasn’t much.”

“Fine,” I snap. “What is this ‘not much’?”

Jez opens her laptop and after tapping on the keyboard for a few seconds, her screen is mirrored on the monitor so we can all see what she sees.

“I’ve dug into every aspect of Mel’s life, and she really doesn’t have any enemies,” Jez says.

“Except the person who tried to kill her,” Grim signs.

“Well, yeah,” Jez admits. “She’s a defense attorney at a really prestigious law firm so sure, there are gonna be people who don’t like her. But we haven’t been able to find anyone who hates her enough to want her dead.”

“What about people linked to her last case?” Thorn asks. “It was high profile, and that’s when her trouble began.”

“The only person I can find that might have an issue with her from that is this guy,” Jez says, nodding toward the screen. “Robert Thompson was the prosecutor on the Tipton case, and Mel beat him.”

“But his record is clean,” Fort adds. “Dude doesn’t even have so much as a parking ticket. And we haven’t found anything linking him to the threats or the bomb.”

“What about anyone in her firm?” Rogue asks. “She just got a huge promotion, and I imagine that’s pissed some people off.”

“These two,” Jez begins as she switches to a new image. “Greg and Thomas Barley are brothers, and both are partners in the firm.”

“They’re linked to the notes and bomb?” Possum asks from his seat at the other end of the table.

“No,” Jez admits. “But Greg has had some complaints lodged against him from female employees. Seems he’s a bit of a douchebag.”

“And the brother?” Animal asks.

“He’s got a knack for making these complaints, and the women who make them, disappear.”

“He’s had them killed?” I snap, every muscle in my body tensing.

“He’s had them fired,” Fort states with a shrug. “Not exactly a smoking gun, but it’s all we got.”

Soul clears his throat.
